Paper Moths and moth paintings - Lesley Kendall 2022
When Sarah, from Sustainable Fashion, approached me to collaborate with her using my paper butterflies, I was excited at the opportunity. The paper butterflies she chose to work with were the Richmond Birdwing Butterflies and their host vine that I had created for the Mary Cairncross ‘Tiny Giants’ Collection .
The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is a threatened species and is listed as Vulnerable ( QLD).
The paper works were photographed by Lyndall Carmichael. These were translated into a digital design by Sustainable Fashion which were then printed onto fabric.
The fabric has been incorporated into Sarah’s new range ‘PAPERWINGS’ for her RANT label.
The clothes will be launched at a pop up shop on the 29 and 30 October. The clothing range is beautiful, fresh, summery and easy to wear.
I will be selling moth boxes, moth paintings and cards at the pop up shop. The moth boxes are custom made boxes with a pinned paper moth in them.
Sarah and I look forward to seeing you there.
If you cant make the pop up shop you can go to Sarah’s website. All clothing will be available online after the pop up shop.

I created a Pink Underwing Moth in paper as part of the ten day Art + Entomology residency in the Mary Cairncross Reserve in October. I used the actual moth specimen for inspiration. This moth was brought in to the scientists unfortunately dead. As it is endangered live specimens are not permitted to be trapped. It has a fascinating larvae.
As the creative researcher on the Art + Entomology project I will be following scientists from the Queensland Museum during their 6 day research programme in the rainforest and recording their discoveries in paper, ink and paint.
Following the research programme there will be a 4 day public engagement programme - Tiny Giants . There will be a variety of workshops, panel discussions and guided walks with the scientists. Refer to the link for the Tiny Giant events below. What an opportunity this is for everyone to learn about invertebrates.
The 10 day residency will be followed by an exhibition of artwork inspired by the research project. The exhibition will be at the Mary Cairncross Reserve Discovery Centre in April, 2022.
I am looking forward to this project and particularly creating paper insects.

In The Cactus House, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Garden, June 2021
life meets art.
Working in the succulent garden I witnessed a real Noisy Miner bird meet my paper Noisy Miner placed under the Aloe bush in The Cactus House, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Garden. What a commotion!
I created the paper Miner bird in response to a ‘sighting’ by Ari, the gardener in The Cactus House, who observed the Noisy Miners swooping in to suck the nectar from the Aloe flowers.
62 Paper Succulents created from recycled paper embedded in the succulent garden in the The Cactus House, Mt Coot-tha Botanic Garden. 4 June - 13 June.
My intention was to create an artwork that faded into nature. The paper succulents were placed on a sand path winding its way through the succulent garden.

The porcelain moths were created during lockdown, to depict the fragility and fleeting nature of life and to remind us of the impermanence of all things.
They are currently in an installation in Artisan Machinery Street Gallery, Fortitude Valley till the 22 May.
At night they sparkle in the darkened street.
